Saint Margaret Mary - Knights of Columbus Council 9553
The Knights of Columbus is a worldwide organization of Catholic men founded by Father Michael J McGivney in New Haven Conn.
at his home parish of Saint Mary's Church. Fr. McGivney saw a dire need to help the poverty stricken parishioners at St. Mary's,
and so, in 1882, founded the Knights of Columbus and set up an insurance system for its members through parish donations.
The brotherhood grew to other parishes and other cities. Eventually, it grew throughout North America and parts of Europe
and currently has a membership of 1.6 million members and one of the best insurance plans in the world.
In terms of our Parish Council, No. 9553, at Saint Margaret Mary's Church, we were chartered in April, 1987 with 30 members.
The pastor of Saint Margaret Mary's, Rev. Fr. Phillip Sherlock, decided that he would like a council of men to help out with
various events such as the parish bazaar and New Year's Eve Dinner-Dance, but more importantly, to do good and charitable
works and to entice other parish men to do the same by joining our ranks. Our personal and worldwide mandate is based on Charity,
Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. The main prerequisite of becoming a knight is to be a practical Catholic as determined by
the Holy See.
The council was started by former members of another established Hamilton Mountain Council, No. 5860. In 1986, Frank Morelli
and Fred Tofani, parishioners at St. Margaret Mary's were summoned by their Pastor to begin proceedings for a new parish council
for St. Margaret Mary's. Today the council has grown to 120 members as it continues to do much work for the parish and for
the poor and down-trodden everywhere. St. Margaret Mary's Council of the Knights of Columbus is also very family oriented
as can be seen in many of its activities, which include the wives, and children of other members. The council has won just
about every award possible over the years as its success story continues. New members are always welcome. For information
on joining “The Right Arm of the Church”, as the Holy Father describes our order, contact the parish office and
ask to be put in touch with the Grand Knight or Membership Chairman.
Submitted By Former District Warden and Past Grand Knight,
Fred Tofani.
The Council's wall of achievement since 1987 used to be in the Hearth room of the Saint Margaret Mary Parish where most of
the council meetings are held every 3rd Tuesday of each month. We are always on the lookout for new members who want to serve
the parish, all enquiries are welcome and will be acknowledged.
