Sometime in 2013, I was asked by some Pilipino church parishioners where they can join a Knights of Columbus Filipino
Council in Hamilton. I told them that there are only Parish Councils in the city and members are parishioner of different
ethnicity. It is a known fact that in Hamilton, there are Ethnic Councils --- Italian, Ukrainian, Croatian to name a few.
This became a challenge to me. I had to think about the issue for a long time. After consulting with a few Brother Knights
from different Parish Councils, the decision was made to start an Exclusive Filipino Council. I spoke to a few Canadian Brother
Knights and asked if this is possible at all and the answer was YES. I, then, spoke to Bro. Bill Pelletier (KofC District
Deputy) and asked for his assistance and the process of starting a Filipino Council began. He got in touch with with Bro.
Marcel Lemmen (Regional New Council Development Chairman) to get the process started.
Last February 2014, a group of Brother Knights had a meeting with Rev. Fr. George Palamattam (Pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus
Parish Church) to ask permission to start a Filipino Council in his Parish. He was very positive and enthusiastic about the
project. He mentioned that he wanted a KofC Council to help with activities in the Parish like fund raising for renovations
in the Church, his re-evangelization program, etc.
Bro.
Bill Pelletier got in contact with the KofC Supreme Office to ask for the requirements needed to start a new Council. There
was a need for at least 20 members to get a Charter (a combination of new and old members --- Transferees from other Councils
in the region). So the process of recruitment began as well as convincing members from other Councils to transfer and become
Charter members.
On 18 March
2014, five new members went through their First Degree Exemplification at St. Eugene's Parish Council 1454. A former member
from the Philippines also joined the Exemplification to get his membership deactivated. They were Bros. Benjamin Balmadres,
Anthony Guevarra, Benigno Hidalgo, Damaso Toreja, Monching Villa and Ranulfo Chan.
With
5 new members, 16 transferees and 1 re-activated member (a total of 22), the KofC Supreme Council granted a Charter to the
new Sacred Heart of Jesus Council 15922 on 25 March 2014. The Council had a meeting with Fr. George Palamattam on 1 April
2014. All the APPOINTED officers were introduced to him on this First Executive Committee meeting. They were Bros. Romy Anastasio (Grand Knight), Fel Marpa (Deputy Grand Knight),
Oscar Aran (Chancellor), Hernando Lopez (Financial Secretary), Rick Abanador (Recorder), Pablo Fajardo (Treasurer), Buddy
Lachica (Advocate), Buddy Guevarra (Warden), Ben Suva (Trustee 1 Year), Buddy Gulles (Trustee 2 Year), Peter Santos (Trustee
3 Year), Amby Fajardo (Inside Guard), Ben Balmadres (Inside Guard), Ernesto Calubayan (Outside Guard) and Ron Chan (Outside
Guard). Rev Fr. George Palamattam was asked to be the Worthy Chaplain.
The
Council meeting was decided to be held on the First Thursday of the Month for the Executive Committee and the Third Thursday
for the General Meeting. Since the First set of new members that had gone through their First Degree, others have joined the
Council.
