All of us are
familiar with the phrase "You keep coming back like a song" in reference, perhaps, to memories of
loved ones-kith and kin-some of whom have gone ahead of us to their eternal
rest. But, literally, some songs do keep coming back to our minds; to list a
few- starting with one with a
title which is, aptly, You Keep Coming Back
Like a Song,
and it goes -
You keep coming back like a song A song that keeps sayin' remember
The sweethearts used to be that was once
you and me
Keeps coming
back like an old melody
The perfume of roses in May,
Returns to my room in December,
From out of the past where forgotten
things belong,
You keep coming back like a song.
Another song that comes to mind: I'll Get By.
I'll get by as long as I have
you
Tho' there be rain and darkness too,
I’ll not complain, I'll see it
through.
Poverty may come to me, that's true,
But what care I, say, I'll get by
As long as I have you.
And then another -Till
the End of Time -
Till the end of time,
Long as stars are in the blue
Long as there's
a spring, a bird to sing
I'll go on loving you. Till the end of
time
Long as roses bloom in May
My love for you will grow deeper with
every passing day.
Till the wells run dry and each mountain
disappears.
I'll be there
for you, to care for you
Through
laughter and through tears
So take my heart in sweet surrender and
tenderly say that
I'm
The one you love and live for
Till the end of time.
These songs may not be familiar to our
young readers but these and many other songs of
yesteryears have survived over the years.... and may survive and be sung, till the end of time!
Of all the creatures around thee, the vilest is
that who kneels before thee. Yet
one claim have I upon thee, which
even you cannot deny. In the bounds of thy creation, none needs you more
than I. (Author unknown)

The Origin of San Juanico Strait
Long, long ago Samar and Leyte were not divided into two islands; they were just one island, and it
was not Leyte nor Samar either. It was after they had been separated by the strait that the northern portion was called
"Samad" and the southern portion "Hira-ite."
The undivided island was being claimed by two brothers,
Bagahupi and Danglay and they were fighting for the privilege of ruling the island. There cannot be two rulers. The war dragged
on for many years with too much bloodshed and plenty of human lives lost, and yet there was no definite decision. God
could stand it no longer.
One day God sent down Michael Archangel in the
form of a cloud and with a thunderbolt as a fiery sword split the island into two, and a strait was formed after the wavy
lines of the sword. The waters of the Pacific Ocean and of the Carigara Bay, in two opposing currents rushed in and met
at Guintiguian which is the reason for the whirlpool there.
The
thunderbolt also struck the two brothers turning each into a stone at their respective camps. The stones grew into mountains
as high as they are now Mount Danglay in front of Tacloban and Mount Bagahupi at Babatngon.
The Barrio of Sinayawan
Makalway, a young brave chieftain, hero of a hundred
battles, had just married Rosaspangdan, the most beautiful maiden in a radius of many, many miles. When they were
enjoying their honeymoon, the
Bulalakaw was in a rampage, mad and furious because he lost his treasured carbuncle. He was hovering
in the sky like an omi nous cloud, looking for a victim. It was at this time
that Rosaspangdan was at her garden tending to her flowers. The monster flew down in a dive and took her away to
his Tarangban at Buho.
Great consternation fell over the village, and the old
people gathered in a council of
war to prepare an army for the rescue of Rosaspangdan, but Makalway said "Get the army ready, but
let me go there alone to get her
back. If you don't hear of me in one day, send the army after me." And he went alone.
Makalway and the monster met and the battle that followed
was the most terrific that ever
was beheld in that countryside. A whole forest was wrecked, all the trees and shrubs over the
hillside of Mt. Bulakawi were
uprooted. The fight lasted two hours but the monster was at last vanquished.
Immediately Makalway went back to his village with his bride and with the head of Bulalakaw on
the point of his spear. Then he danced, not only because he was able to rescue
his bride but also because the monster that gripped the country in terror was dead.
In the village there is a round amphitheatre that is devoid
of vegetation and lined with big
rocks all around. This is where Makalway
danced which is why it is called Sinayawan, meaning where he danced.

Prepared by Carigara 11 District, Division of Leyte
In consonance with DepEd Order No.
25, 2009, Tagak ES of
Carigara II District hosted the DepEd Regional Office 8 Brigada Eskwela 2009 Kick Off on May 18, 2009, first
day of the weeks long event. The caravan, which started at Sagkahan ES, a
kilometre and a half from Tagak, included Superintendent Sol C. Lumarda of
Leyte Division; Mrs. Bernardita C.
Nivera, District Supervisor; Mr. Reynaldo Pamanian, MT III; Mr. Epifanio
Baculanta Jr., Pll: teachers and the
Brgy. Council. Leading the caravan was the Drum and Bugle Corps. of NHS (thanks
to their principal, Mr. Nino S. Mendoza).
Reaching Tagak ES, they found it in
festive air with its
colorful buntings and streamers, multicoloured umbrellas at the center of dining tables, and a well-decorated
stage. In no time the key players of Brigada Eskwela from the regional and division offices arrived, with their
promotional and administrative personnel, so with the LGU, the NGOs and members of the media. Mr. Jose A. Gomba,
Head Teacher III and the school head of Tagak, with Mrs. Jovena S. Tadefa, Master Teacher I and President, Carigara
II Teachers League, led in welcoming them with nice leis and wide ribboned hats, while the drum and bugle corps
merrily played their welcoming piece.
Mrs. Beatriz M.Gomba, Master Teacher
I and the emcee,
started the Opening Program with an invocation given by Mrs. Felicitas S.
Macalinao, Teacher III, followed by the singing of the Philippine National
Anthem. Then Superintendent Sol C. Lumarda warmly welcomed everybody and
expressed her appreciation for those who joined the caravan. She said Brigada Eskwela ensures all
public schools are ready in time for the school opening.
Tasked of acknowledging the participants,
Mrs. Bemardita C.
Nivera proudly presented the Brgy. Council of Tagak, headed by Hon. Fernando Permejo; Brgy. Rizal, headed by Hon.
Medardo Petallana, Brgy. Sagkahan headed by Hon. Mario Narido; and the GPTCA
headed by Mr. Antonio Abelar. As she called each group, all the members quickly
stood up and in unison declared
their wholehearted support for Brigada Eskwela.
Since the district had prepared some
tokens for the DepEd
and LGU Officials in gratitude for their support of Carigara II District, Mrs.
Bernardita C. Nivera asked her school heads to give to these officials the
tokens which contained among others, an article by Mrs. Willa Mandapat, Master
Teacher I, about the nutrients of papaya, considered by Chris topher Columbus,
discoverer of America, as the "fruit of the angels". Cong. Ebbie Go
Apostol, Director Sol Matugas and
company were happy to receive the unexpected tokens.
There was, then, an exchange of roles.
This time, the good
congresswoman, Mayor, Regional Director, Assistant Regional Director, Superintendent, and Assistant Superintendent
were the ones who did the honor of giving to the school heads papaya seedling in clean containers. The school
heads were so happy to receive the seedlings from their highly esteemed superiors. They were all
the more inspired to clean their respective schools during the Brigada Eskwela and plant the seedlings with 100%
viability.
Carigara II District Chorale presented
their beautiful
rendition of Yoyang, South of the Border, and Down by the Old Mill stream for
the intermission number. The graceful swaying of the smiling teachers as they
sang the old time favorites entertained the audience.
Messages of support followed. The
barangay captains and the
GPTCA President came up the stage and each reiterated his support for Brigada
Eskwela. Cong. Ebbie Go. Apostol assured her support would not only be for
Brigada Eskwela but for more teacher items and school buildings for her
constituents. Mayor Anlie Go Apostol reinforced her Mom's support for Brigada Eskwela and for DepEd by hiring
school board teachers and completing incomplete elementary schools like what
she did for Sta. Fe ES.
Capping the kick off program, Director
Sol C. Matugas
thanked all participants for their support to the event. She emphasized that Brigada Eskwela not
only helps the schools but also the government in saving millions of pesos.
Being responsible for the number I
rank in the NAT of Regions 8, she praised Tagak ES for being a high performing
school.
The actual work - OPLAN BRIGADA ESKWELA
- followed. With
rolled sleeves and with wide hats, with paint brushes, brooms, bolos, and rakes, the participants started
working, Congresswoman Apostol and Mayor Anlie painted the flower boxes. So did Director Sol
Matugas and Superintendent Lumarda. All the regional and division supervisors and the administrative personnell, the
NGOs and school heads had the choice of pulling the weeds and raking them; teachers and parents, those with carpentry
skills did minor repairs.
All participants had high enthusiasm
to work and make the
school clean and beautiful. The inspiring Brigada Eskwela spirit was fervently burning in their hearts, the
reason why it was hard for the school head, Mr. Jose A. Gomba, to ask ARD Alberto T. Escobarte and ASDS
Manuel P. Albano to stop cleaning their part to prepare the needed snacks, why the 20 members of the Bible Readers
Society of Leyte didn't leave their wide area until it was thoroughly clean and why the committed members of Leyte
Division Medical and Dental Team continued treating the community folks until noontime..
While everybody was working, Dr. Erlinda
C. Buendia, OIC and
Asst. Chief of EED, and Mrs. Virginia C. Isanan, ES-1, continued their coordination of the activities with the
host school. Director Matugas, on the other hand, had to stop her painting work to give the local
and national media her time for the interview for the needed press releases.
Tagak ES felt very much honored for
being chosen as host of
the Brigada Eskwela Kick Off of Region 8. It was the first time in its history
of 60 years that high ranking government officials, the NGOS, and the local and
national media came to work and
spread the gospel of volunteerism, the Brigada Eskwela way. Such rare event
touched everybody and its
beautiful memory was permanently etched in the minds and hearts of all those
who came and joined the noble
task.
The district staff who assisted Tagak
ES in hosting the
Brigada Eskwela Kick Off:
1. Mr. Epifanio k. Baculanta Jr.,

Time beckoned us to be reunited
once more as the Guindapunan Elementary School Alumni
Associa tion as we celebrated its 2nd Grand Alumni Home coming on Sept. 21-23,
2009.
Indeed, the reminiscence
of Guindapunan Elementary School
olden years has livened up again through this celebration. The 3-day remarkable affair was spearheaded by Mr. Ephraim
A. Pascual
the GESAA president and Mrs. Alejandra
P. Narbonita, the Principal II of Congressman Alberto T. Aguja Memorial School and the business manager of GESAA
with the full support of GES
Alumni Ass'n. Officers as well as
the Guindapunan Elementary Teaching Staff headed by our Principal Mrs. Epifania R. Baculanta Jr.
This year's theme of the
celebration "Yesterday Once More"
is indeed in perfect timing as it enables the Balikbayan alumni to reminisce the past, the way we were in our elementary grades,
Moreover, to rekindle old
cherished friendships, strengthen camara derie, reunite old barkadas and to
recall beautiful memories.
The activities during the
GES Grand Alumni Homecoming were as follows:
It started with the registration
and the testimonial dinner on the first day. A parade
followed the next day from Kan
Gara Gym to Guindapunan Elem. School.
Every cluster had its specified colored T-Shirt to identify their class. There
was a Drum Corps competition with
the leading elementary schools as
participants.
Congressman Alberto T. Aguja
Memorial School won 1st place;
Cassidy Elem. School,
2nd place;
Carigara II Central School,
3rd place,
Guindapunan Elem. School,
4th place.
The Alumni Social Night that
was held at the Kan Gara Gym followed. During the Social
Night Mr. Ephraim A. Pascual, the
GESAA president, Mr. Victor P. Diaz, the Administrative Officer VI of the Division of Leyte and the consultant of GESAA, Mrs.
Bernardita C. Nivera, District
Supervisor of Carigara II
District, and the Municipal Mayor, Hon. Anlie Go Apostol, were given the opportunity to deliver their inspiring messages and
to express their
heartfelt appreciation for all the alumni. Some curacha numbers danced by the special visitors followed
and then the coronation of the
Most Popular Alumna/Alumnus.
The last day of the celebration
was spent at the Boho Beach where everyone enjoyed
chatting, eating, and swimming
with their batchmates.

June 27, 2009
was a momentous day in the lives of the
members of the Church of Jesus
Christ of the Latter-day Saints Carigara District Tacloban Philippines Mission.
As the whole world is scrambling over various maladies (both
, natural and man-made) the saints of Carigara District-Tacloban Philippines Mission have remained steadfast yet
watchful as they heed to the counsel of President Wilford Woodruf that the "Latter-Day Saints
have to be quiet, careful and wise
while watching the signs of times.'
The coming of that day heralded the Carigara District into
the path towards
"Self-reliance", and ultimately to the building of Zion, the Lord's
City, as the District officially
opened to the public the existence of its first Welfare Farm under its Welfare Program.
The Farm's Dedication was attended by Pres. Edwin Malit,
Tacloban Mission President, and
was witnessed by other district leaders. We, the Saints should understand that
we are not planting in this field for our own benefit nor for this day, rather
this is our gift and a preparation for our children and the future generation,
especially for those who are really In need, Pres. Malit said.
He added that the effort to organize a welfare program, is
part of fulfilling God's
commandment to build Zion, to have one heart and one Mind, where there will be no poor among us, in
Carigara.
As conceived by Elder Abram Dailey and Sis Wanda Dailey,
couple missionary in the district, through the concurrence of Tacloban Mission
and Carigara District Presidency,
the creation of Welfare Farm came into form.
The said Welfare Program was organized out of the pure
desire of the Dailey’s to inspire
the leaders and member-saints of the Carigara District (and the Mission) on how they could help
manage themselves in augmenting their
capacity to sustain the temporal needs of their family and love ones, and eventually to provide them food on their
table, clothes on their back, and roof over their heads', as to the words of the Prophets of the
Church.
'This is what we have to remember, we need to pull ourselves
closer just a little bit, all
collectively, so we can raise our brethren up, not just barely hanging on to life but to bring them up
to where we are, Elder Dailey instructed.
Utilizing his ingenuity in farming and welfare farm
administration from his native
home in Utah, U.S.A. Elder Dailey led the district into this welfare farm program. This was materialized
owing also to the benevolence and
generosity of Sis. Sylvia Abellanosa and her family allowed the district to use their land for the said
purpose.
Sis. Abellanosa, a member-saint and a widow, on her part,
is crateful that she became
instrumental in the creation of the farm.
The Farm is located at Barangay Parag-um, a hinterland and
village in the town of Carigara, Leyte, covering around 4-hectare of land.
Every week, the
District Presidency, thru the stewardship of Pres. Benjamin Cinco, assigned its
6 branches to visit and cultivate the farm.
Pres. Cinco said that the Farm and its upcoming distribution
center will both prepare the
saints in the whole district for the much awaited approval in applying for stakehood.
Being a stake assures the Saints that all will lie in the
safest place while waiting for our
Redeemer's second coming. Looking forward on that day without fear but watching in peace the
signs of time.
To date, the farm is already being planted with sweet
potatoes, cabbage and corn. Other vegetables, fruits and root crops will also
follow, along with poultry and hog raising.
For this, the
district is also assigning some
families to serve as regular
caretakers in the farm. Truly, according to the promise of
Nephi in the Book of Mormon
prophet, the Lord will not suffer
the righteous to perish.
And it only takes a piece of land and sheer hard, patience and yes, prayer th at
have played a vital role for creation
of the Lord's City.

When in doubt, silence can give us A
chance to grasp better ideas vertically, When solutions to life's problem Crumbles
like castles on a weak sand, Reverting to calmness allow better perspective. A
leader who insists on his unmodefiability of ideas And fail to solicit other ideas of
his colleagues His inflexibility can be disastrously lethal. Whereas
if he creates a freeway to dissention. It's like an invitation to a fresh-giving
deep pool. Different personalities
emerge when converging, Ideas are varied as many of those present, We
can respect what one may deliberate, For even the humblest of our minion Can
spark a subtle strike to light the darkest room.
Silence may even be
required during love making, Eve has to concentrate on her surrender, While
Adam has to assert on his conquest Procreation is sacred and utterly divine For
God has made us instruments of His creation. Silence
is a pill to sustain our sunset years, Quiet is necessary when happy reminiscences Come
to assail our souls in meditative moment All at once beautiful melodies are lofting
by Making us dance to life’s ever changing music.
