The Prime Minister of Canada on Philippine Independence Day

Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada on Philippine Independence Day

June 12, 2013
London, United Kingdom

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the followingstatement on the celebration of Philippine Independence Day:

“Today, I extend my best wishes to Filipino-Canadians and all those around the world celebrating the 115th anniversary of Philippine Independence Day.

“Canada has a strong and active Filipino community of nearly 500,000 people, and it continues to grow. The Philippines is one of the largest source countries for immigrants in Canada, and Tagalog is Canada’s fastest growing language.

“Canada’s Filipino community contributes immensely to our country in all areas of endeavour. In particular, in September 2012, I was proud to appoint Mr. Tobias C. Enverga Jr. as Canada’s first Senator of Filipino heritage.

“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I wish all celebrants a happy Philippine Independence Day. I also encourage Canadians to learn more about our country’s vibrant Filipino community.”

PM to visit the Philippines and Hong Kong
Topic: Bilateral Trade

October 31, 2012
Ottawa, Ontario

Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that he will travel to the Philippines and Hong Kong from November 10-11, 2012.  The visits will take place immediately following the Prime Minister’s six-day visit in India from November 3-9. He will be accompanied by Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, Joe Oliver, Minister of Natural R

“Canada’s relations with the Philippines continue to grow and diversify, aided by an increasingly important Canada-Filipino community,” said Prime Minister Harper.  “On this trip, I look forward to exploring ways of further strengthening ties between both countries.”

While in Manila on November 10, the Prime Minister will meet with Benigno Simeon Aquino III, President of the Philippines, to discuss bilateral trade and investment, security cooperation and regional issues. He will also partake in local cultural and community events.

On November 11, the Prime Minister will travel to Hong Kong where he will meet with Chun-ying Leung, Chief Executive of the Special Administrative Region, with a view to further strengthening an already deep and historical relationship.  He will also participate in a Remembrance Day ceremony and pay special tribute to Canadians who died defending Hong Kong during the Second World War.
“Canada and Hong Kong enjoy a rich, multifaceted relationship, strengthened by strong people to people ties,” said Prime Minister Harper. “This visit will serve to advance bilateral commercial ties and reaffirm Canada’s support for democratic development in the Special Administrative Region.”

Canada is greatly enriched by citizens with ties to the countries being visited. The Philippines is now the top source of immigrants to Canada, with nearly 500,000 people of Filipino origin now residing in the country. Canada is also home to 500,000 individuals of Hong Kong descent.  Hong Kong has the largest concentration of Canadians abroad next to the United States.

Subject: Thank-you letter

Dear Bonner and Dodong (Cabilan),

I felt glad and proud when I and my colleagues in the Consulate General shared in the festivity of your Independence Day Ball and met the members of the Filipino community in Hamilton.  Your efficiency -- I fully agree with your arrangement of having all of Filcom join in one big Independence Day commomeration --  discipline and patriotic fervor are an inspiration to us all.

I look forward to productive and meaningful working relations with your group.  Rest assured that the door of your Consulate-General in Toronto is open to all our kababayans for whatever consular needs they may have.

I would have loved to respond immediately that, yes, I could join the golf game but the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila has asked all Heads of Posts in Canada and the U.S. to be in Manila for consulations at that week. So I have to send my regrets at this time but I am looking forward to future opportunities when I could enjoy with you the beautiful greens of Canada, and thusly inspired, would at last be blessed with an improvement in my game.

With my best personal regards to you and your family, Mr. and Mrs. Cabilan, the HFCC and its 10 supporting organizations, and to all our kababayans and Filcom friends in Hamilton.

Very truly yours,

(Sgd.)

Dr. Romulo Anastasio
Topic: Family Doctor

The College of Physicians and Surgeons, like the College of Teachers try to act upon complaints swiftly, giving out penalties even before the physician or teacher is given due process in the court of law. Very often, the reputation of the accused is forever tarnished.

Dr. Romulo Anastasio is an excellent family physician, one of the best in Hamilton. He has cared for my family for many years and we will continue to put our health care in his very capable hands.  We find him very thorough and professional in dealing with his patients.

Two years ago, he was even nominated as one of the best physicians in the city in the Readers Choice Awards given by the Hamilton Spectator and no one complained then. It will be very unfortunate if we lose a very good and dedicated doctor due to this article.

Topic: Computer Repair Scam

The Hamilton Police Service has received numerous reports of a telephone scam where the fraudster gains access to the victim’s personal home computer.  The victim receives a phone call from an alleged Microsoft technician telling the person that there is a problem with their computer; usually told it is a virus.  For more details link here Telephone-scam to the Police Media Release.

WEBSITE UPDATE
Mood:  blue

Hi all, due to some unforseen circumstances its been a struggle to update the HFCC website. Right now I am working on a new angle that is hopefully easier and faster to work with. This may take a few weeks so bear with me. This also may change the overall look of this website.

Wish me luck.

Net Proceeds, PICAH Fundraising
Topic: PICAH
October 29, 2009

Dear Friends:

On behalf of PICAH President, Jimmy Ravarra, I would like to express my sincere and deep appreciation to everyone who took the time to be a part of the fund raising event last Saturday, Oct. 24th at the Hamilton Filipino Community Centre.

As promised by Jimmy Ravarra, the net proceeds from the sale of front door tickets, water and pop will go to the flood victims in the Philippines.  A cheque, in the amount of
$2,340.50 was issued on Oct. 27th, 2009 payable to the HFCC Calamity Fund and delivered personally by Jimmy Ravarra to HFCC President & CEO, Bonner Villabroza.  This amount including other donations collected earlier from other organizations and individuals will be remitted to the Philippine National Red Cross.  The list of donors is available for viewing at HFCC's website:
www.hfcc3.com/

Also, other income from the Oct. 24th event like the proceeds from the 50/50 draw and raffle tickets went to the PICAH hockey team who worked hard to make this event a success.  If you have any questions or comments, please call Jimmy Ravarra

@ (905) 648-4421 or myself @ (905) 547-4240.

Again, thank you so much for your help and support.

Government of Canada announces special immigration measures for typhoon victims in the Philippines

Fyi, see new release below. You might be able to fast track the application of immigration of your relative.

News Release

Government of Canada announces special immigration measures for typhoon victims in the Philippines

Ottawa, October 1, 2009 — Residents in the Philippines who are significantly affected by Typhoon Ketsana are being offered special measures to facilitate immigration to Canada, announced Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney.

“I would like to express my deepest sympathy and support for the people of the Philippines affected by this terrible disaster,” said Minister Kenney. “This government is moving quickly to reunite Canadians and permanent residents with their families by extending a welcome to those who wish to come to Canada.”

Effective immediately, Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s ( CIC ) visa office in the Philippines is responding on a priority basis for those directly affected by the disaster.
This will be applied to new and existing applications from Canadian citizens, permanent residents and protected persons who have close family members in the Philippines. They must, however, identify themselves as being directly and significantly affected by the current situation and notify CIC .

New sponsorship applications should have “Philippines” prominently written on the mailing envelope. Sponsors and applicants presently in Canada who have applications in process should notify the CIC Call Centre at 1-888-242-2100 (in Canada only) to identify their existing applications, if they or the family they have sponsored have been adversely affected.
Temporary residence applicants will be given priority processing by the visa office in Manila once they demonstrate that they have been significantly affected by the typhoon.

These special measures are in addition to the up to $5 million for humanitarian assistance and early recovery to respond to the needs of the populations affected by Typhoon Ketsana announced by International Cooperation Minister Beverley J. Oda earlier this week.
